Hi guys! Today I wanted to talk about something we can all relate to: food! I thought I would give you a look into my grocery bags and see what I buy each week to keep me from driving through Burger King every day and ordering a Crispy Chicken Sandwich (which would be easy to do because those taste really good.) Not only that though, these foods also keep me satisfied, full, and healthy!
My boyfriend, Shane, and I go grocery shopping once a week. Almost always on Sunday’s and it’s become our weekly ritual together. Unfortunately we don’t have a Trader Joe’s or a Whole Foods Market (as my bags would suggest) in South Dakota, so we do all of our shopping at Safeway. I know this varies state to state and of course city to city, but in our town and for our household Safeway is the best. I can get coupons on their mobile app with almost everything we buy and they have the best produce selection in my opinion.
I have a meal planning calendar on our fridge and this market list you can see all scratched out above. I LOVE paper supplies and if I have an excuse to buy more then I do, thus the market list. This market list is made by Rifle Paper Co. but it is sold at Paper Source and you can buy it here!
I hope this peek into our groceries gives you some inspiration for your next trip to the store or even a look at a new item you want to try! We also have leftover items many times from the week before. For example this week, we didn’t need bread, veggies, or eggs. We usually buy produce every week so it’s fresh but for some reason this week we just had a ton of broccoli left over.
First up is our fruits for the week. Shane doesn’t really eat much fruit but he will eat bananas so we buy those weekly. I like to eat bananas or apples at work with some peanut butter around 10 am and it fills me up until lunch. Every morning I eat yogurt with strawberries so those are a must as well. The lemon is for a marinade I’ll be throwing together this week and if it turns out great I’ll write a post on it.
Next is dairy! Although almond milk isn’t really dairy but we’ll roll with it. I eat these Dannon Light and Fit Greek yogurts every. single. day. They’re so good! I used to buy a tub of it but I found it to be a time saver to just buy the pre-packaged ones so I can cut up some strawberries and throw them in on my way to work in the mornings. They also have a toasted coconut flavor that is awesome, but I like vanilla when I put fruit in. Shane and I are starting to train for a 5k so I wanted to buy some almond milk to drink after we run. He isn’t a huge fan of it but that means more for me 🙂
Onto my lunch items! I like to take a few pieces of this turkey, a slice of swiss cheese, and some mustard and just roll it up for a quick lunch. I come home every day for a lunch break to let our dog out and end up playing with her most of the time so I like a quick and filling lunch, and this does it for me. I bought the cheese sticks this week just to have some more snack items after work. Shane’s lunch isn’t pictured because I won’t eat it! He eats bologna sandwiches almost every day. I make it for him so he can take it to work but it’s just not my cup of tea.
These are our major dinner items. Safeway was having a sale on frozen fish this week so we got these 4 salmon portions for only $5! We bought 2 packs so ended up with 8 portions for only $10. We don’t buy salmon or shrimp weekly but whenever they’re on sale I like to buy them because they stay fine in the freezer.
We do buy this chicken almost weekly. You better bet if there’s a sale on this chicken (which I get on my coupon app) then we stock up! I cook chicken for dinner at least 4-5 times a week. I just love chicken! Shane really isn’t too picky so he’s pretty much open to anything I make, so that’s easy on me for planning meals.
I love this weight watchers chicken mainly because the portions and because they are already “pounded out” as I call it. You know the chicken breasts you buy that are thick on one end and thin on the other and then you have to pull out the meat hammer (that’s what I call it) and pound it so it’s all even? I HATE doing that. With these I don’t have to! It just so happens they’re weight watchers brand but they are my favorite for sure.
Finally are a few of my snacks! My mom got me caught onto Skinny Pop Popcorn. The only ingredients are popcorn kernels, sunflower oil, and salt. This stuff is so good! This is actually the first week I bought a bag of it. Usually I just have a couple handfuls when I visit my parents house. I’m sure this will be my new favorite nightly snack. I know I’m not the only one who likes to watch TV with something to crunch on.
These nuts are also a new one for me this week. My favorite nuts are pistachios. However I don’t like them salted! When I was in college I was able to buy a huge bag of pistachios for $7 that were unsalted at the local store. In our town though, I can’t find them without salt! It’s actually really frustrating for me because I just don’t like salt. These were on sale this week though and so I figured I’d give them a try. Peanuts and almonds are definitely my other favorite nuts so it looked like a good combo. There is some salt but I hope it’s not too overpowering!
These also had a B+ on the Fooducate app so I think they’ll be good. If you guys haven’t heard of the Fooducate app I’d definitely recommend downloading it! Basically you can scan the bar code on whatever food or drink item you want and it will give it a grade. It’s based on how processed the item is, if it’s good for dieters, what protein or iron it has, etc. If it doesn’t have a great score (B- or higher I’d say) then it gives you alternatives and lets you know what is considered an “A” product in that category. It’s a really great app and I always use it if I’m thinking of buying a new product.
Ok guys that is my week of groceries! Of course we have other things in our fridge like our veggies and condiments but this was the haul for the week. Shane and I also are a very budget friendly household so in the future I’ll have a post about how I budget and especially how I budget for our groceries for the month! I also will post a recipe this week with some of these ingredients I bought. I’d love to hear if any of you have any healthy food recommendations. Do you have any “must haves” that you buy weekly?
