Turning 18 was awesome because you’re an “adult” and can buy scratch tickets and then turning turning 2o is great because you’re no longer a “teen” and you feel like maybe you’re actually an “adult” now. Then 21 is the best because of the obvious and you have a great time and party and feel like you’ve finally made it to the big leagues! Then 22 was blah for me. 22 is just 22. I thought maybe I’d feel that way about 23. But 23? 23 feels like the best YET! I don’t really feel like an adult or a kid anymore, I just feel like me and that’s the best. Sometimes I feel like I’m adulting too much and then some days I feel like a little tadpole in a big pond of adult frogs.
For me at least, I think 23 is the best because I’m finally feeling at peace with myself as a human being and just learning that I am in fact, human. I feel like I’m taking the best care of my body I have in a very long time, I am taking control of my own creative life and business (including this blog, which is an AMAZING feeling), I have my puppy P and live in my own apartment that I got to pick out with my boyfriend and that feels like a real home. I have some great trips planned for this year, I’m setting goals for myself, and better yet I believe in myself to know that I will achieve those goals. So that’s my shpeel on 23 and the picture above is my representation of 23. Comfortable in my own skin and happy happy happy!
Onto my day! This was my ideal day in Rapid City, so if you ever come here these are my recommendations! I’ve linked them as I write and I’ll also categorize this in Travels in case you find yourself in SD. Of course I had to stop for coffee first and the birthday coffee was from Dixon Coffee Company! They are my favorite drive thru place in town and they are strictly a coffee stand. My other favorite place is Alternative Fuel and they are the opposite and only have sit down. Anytime I meet someone for a sit down coffee I always advocate for Alternative Fuel because they’re located right downtown. Bottom line they’re both awesome and go check them out. I am a local advocate!
My parents are out of town but I knew I wanted to meet up with the rest of my family so Shane, P, and I headed down to my favorite park in town to hit up the local farmers market. We met my sister, niece, and brother there and I was an excited puppy mom because we were getting to try out the new harness I had bought for P. Doesn’t she look adorable?
I love going to farmers markets for a few big reasons. #1 I love shopping local. Coffee, food, books, etc. I think it’s important to support local stores so I always try to do that! #2 I love fresh food! #3 There’s always so many different options and it’s fun to walk around and pick and choose what you want to bring home. I was so tempted by this blueberry lemon loaf but I opted for just a slice of pumpkin bread. This vendor had all of her proceeds for the summer donated to a children’s foundation which I thought was great. My sister and I also bought some garlic and herb kale chips from her which my niece surprisingly really loved. Shane and I also bought a bag of pears. The vendor let us try one and it was awesome and we got a whole bag for only $7!
Onto lunch! We went to a place downtown I had never been to before called Main Street Pizza and Subs. My sister told me that they served gyros and I haven’t had one of those in forever so we headed there. It was delicious! I got a lamb one and my brother got a chicken one. We could have easily eaten 2 each because they were so good but I maintained some willpower.
After lunch my brother had to go to work so the rest of us continued onto the local bookstore downtown. I love Main Street Square. It has a really awesome vibe and so many of the places I like to shop at and hang out at are down there. The bookstore is called Mitzi’s and is such a cool store. The children’s section is amazing! It’s in the back of the store (behind the stairs in the picture) and there are fairy tale murals painted on the wall. I love going here because again I love to support local business but also it’s such a relaxing place to me. I love to read and I was so tempted to buy a mythology book about mermaids. I may have to go back for that one…
Shane and I headed home after shopping downtown and he sang me happy birthday with the awesome cupcakes he had gotten me from another local bakery called Star Spangled Batter. He had sent me 2 boxes at work the day before and we still had leftovers! I opened my present from him which was the Luckiest Girl Alive book. I told you I love books! I heard this book was a great one to read if you loved Gone Girl so I had hinted about it to him. 🙂
Finally we ended the night at my current summer favorite, Murphy’s. They have this beautiful patio that faces out to the street and whenever someone wants to meet me for drinks or to hang out I always suggest Murphys. They have amazing drinks and the food we had last night was SO GOOD. It was so relaxing especially since it had cooled down outside and was the perfect end to the day. The shirt I am wearing in this picture is called the Mantra shirt from Wildfox and it really is my mantra for year 23 and on! It’s on sale too which is a plus.
Finally I just wanted to show some of the beautiful things that will be joining my life for year 23. I just loved being with my family and that was present enough! I really appreciate the thoughtfulness from everyone in my life though and if you’re reading this and did get me a gift thank you again! It’s totally not about that, but all these things are so cool I had to share them because they’re still in stores if you want to bring them into your home too!
My sister works at Starbucks so her theme was coffee for me, which is perfect! The new Starbucks fall line of cups has come out and I didn’t even know! She got me this gorgeous gold and brown mug which is my new favorite mug of mine. I have an entire mug collection btw and I think that’d be a fun post to feature someday. She also gave me this reusable travel mug which has an awesome illustration on it. I went online to try and link the cups so you could order online if you wanted but they’re not even up there yet, so I think you have to go to your local Starbucks to see the new collection! It’s awesome having an in at Starbucks so thanks to my sis 🙂
These next items were all gifts from myself to myself. My sister and my hairstylist both recommended the candles so that’s where I had heard of them and they smell amazing! In our town we can find them at TJMaxx, which is where I bought both of them, and Gordmans. However here is their website so check it out! Something about fall makes me want to burn candles and as I’m typing this Moonlit Orchid is burning in front of me.
Finally these were my big splurges for the year. I’ve always wanted a Kate Spade purse and when I was in TJMaxx for the candles I came across this beauty. I bought it with travel season at my work in mind. I have to tote around so many things when I’m traveling for months at a time and I usually have a purse, a tote bag, laptop cases, suitcases, etc. This is a big enough bag that I’ll be able to fit my laptop, camera, purse essentials, planner, and chargers in it easily! I’ve also decided 23 is the year I’m going to try out more black so the color fit perfectly!
Then I was persuaded (fairly easily) by my sister that I needed matching boots. That’s how it works right? She found these Steve Madden boots and after trying them on I realized I had found my fall boots. I really am NOT a shoe person. I’d rather buy clothes than shoes any day but something about these just spoke to me. I think I’ll be able to wear them at work and off work and they’re something different than my average shoe choice which is currently Birks. I couldn’t find the exact pair of boots but if you really love them here is the closest I found!
Well if you’ve made it this far into my post thanks for still being here! I just really had a great day and appreciate all the people in my life and thought a post dedicated to them and my day was a small way to say thanks to everyone. What has been your favorite age thus far? Let me know down below and tell me why!
